To Walk Amongst Dragons

Matthew Palmer – The boy who died. Unequivocally good, perspicacious, and hard-working. On a souring date, Matthew found himself driving along a cliffside circuit during a meteor shower. Little did he expect, as he was rounding the the curve, his life would change dramatically as an explosion propels him into a adventure for a lifetime.

George Miller – the self-proclaimed “Savior of the cosmos.” Charismatic, mysterious, and a man of few words. His goals are unknown, however he will do what he must to protect the universe and fulfill his destiny as the guardian angel who will bring light and purity to the dark unknown, but can he succeed or will he be led astray by his Messianic complex?

While I don’t want to spoil too much, I will say that I took a lot of inspiration from Vandal Savage, specifically Phil Bourassa‘s incarnation(s) of Vandal Savage, when designing George Miller. I wanted to portray someone who had a gruff exterior with an imposing presence mixed with a calm serenity. The military greens were meant to imply his active role as a combatant, some element I probably took from Alive: The Final Evolution‘s James McPherson. I also used the DALLE-2‘s AI image generator to provide references for an older, bearded man with a long trench coat because I sought to really portray how odd and unknowable this character feels. I also wanted to give his aesthetics a bit of a vagrant or ronin feel, indicating that he has no true home and his life is one of wandering.

Ismerelda Renhellur – The Queen of the Dragon’s Creed. Steadfast, strategic, benevolent, and inspiring. She fights in a holy crusade against the dark Nothingness. Her power radiates almost limitlessly and she is rivaled only by the coming of the Angels. She battles in this crusade to protect the universe, however underlying her valor is an undercurrent of guilt – guilt for failures long past of not sooner arriving to her home world before it was destroyed in the battle between her mother and the angel, Malael. She devotes her self to preparing for the oncoming war by whatever means necessary, earning herself the moniker of The Dark Terror in some worlds. Has this trauma and mission driven her mad or is her ruthlessness what the universe needs in the upcoming galactic conflict?

Ismerelda Renhellur: initial draft

It’s hard to get away with an original idea. The late 2010s and early 2020s are dominated by one vision when you hear “mad” and “dragon queen.” If the visage of George RR Martin‘s Daenerys Targaryen does not come to mind, then you have been missing out on one of the most poorly written downfalls a character could experience. In any case, Ismerelda has no such illusions or irrational thoughts of her goals, means, or methods. Her experiences have forged her as the ultimate pragmatist and strategic wager of a universal war. Although it may pain her, she does not let the quibblings of ethics or mortals to slow her armada. This part of her personality I most likely drew from Disney’s Maleficent, both the original and the Angelina Jolie live action versions. I wanted to craft a powerful character whose reputation precedes her like the shadow of a dragon flying overhead but at the same time as someone who suffered a tragedy, she herself has mortal qualities that allude to a softer, benevolent spirit. I wanted the ruthlessness of her character to be balanced out by the integrity of her good will and drive to protect the universe. In some ways she and George Miller are almost foils of each other.
